There are pros and cons to both a regular coal grill and a portable gas grill. Figure out what you need, want, and willing to pay and soon you will be on your way!

Most people use charcoal grills for flavor and tradition but aren't very convenient. People think of a charcoal grill when they think about 4th of July barbecues and back yard gatherings. Also the flavor that comes from a charcoal grill is unique and can give a smokey flavor that gas cannot. Charcoal grills are also usually cheaper depending on the features you want and need.

Gas grills are usually a lot quicker to light and easier to use than charcoal grills and can usually be lit at the push of a button where as charcoal grills need to be ignited with something like a match and take longer to heat up, but a gas grill is easier to keep a consistent temperature with temperature control functions for cooking where as you have to keep checking with a charcoal grill while it heats up. A gas grill cleans up easily. You don't have to worry about dumping the ash after you're done cooking, simply scrub the grates with a grill brush, and clean out the drip pans after the grill cools down.

But then again with charcoal smoke rises from the charcoal infusing the food with flavor. Some gas grills have flavor bars, which vaporize the dripping fat, and produce smoke but many people prefer the traditional and classic taste of charcoal so depending on the types of food you are going to be cooking on the grill this will be an important factor. Charcoal grills are usually easier to assemble than gas grills but then again gas grills last longer with maintenance.

Charcoal grills should be replaced annually whereas with a gas grill replacing parts as needed and proper maintenance will let you have you grill for a longer period of time. Charcoal grills release about twice as much carbon dioxide per hour as gas grills do but charcoal comes from trees, which absorb carbon as they grow, making the emissions net zero. Gas grills are cleaner burning so it's a personal choice on how you rate your carbon emissions.

There is no right or wrong answer for picking out a grill but with making your own list of pro's and con's the choice will be quite clear. Enjoy your cookout!
